{"id":781,"date":"2013-09-11T13:18:44","date_gmt":"2013-09-11T05:18:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ssedro.com\/blog\/?p=781"},"modified":"2013-09-11T13:23:08","modified_gmt":"2013-09-11T05:23:08","slug":"saving-trees-one-worksheet-at-a-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ssedro.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/11\/saving-trees-one-worksheet-at-a-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Saving Trees, One Worksheet at a Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our school is implementing the enVision math program. \u00a0Although it has a hard cover book for students, there are also 4 worksheets\/games that go with each lesson. \u00a0This is both hard on the earth because of all the paper it consumes, and hard on the teachers and students who need to manage all that paper.<\/p>\n<p>Bart Fabianowicz just started his second year as one of our iPad Proof of Concept teachers. He developed a method for having the students complete at least two of the worksheets using their iPads. The first step is to download each of the worksheets and a PDF and then upload it to a shared location in Google Drive. \u00a0I posted step-by-step directions <a title=\"Directions for preparing the worksheets\" href=\"https:\/\/ssedro.clarify-it.com\/d\/26gxkk\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. \u00a0Note that we use<a href=\"http:\/\/hapara.com\/teacher-dashboard-for-google-apps\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Teacher Dashboard\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0which among other things sets up a shared document folder in Google Drive for every class.<\/p>\n<p>When the worksheets are ready, it is time to bring in the students. \u00a0I&#8217;ve <a href=\"https:\/\/ssedro.clarify-it.com\/d\/y4p2yh\" target=\"_blank\">posted directions <\/a>below to teach students what to do.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"screensteps-webpost-35717\">\n<h2 class=\"screensteps-title\">Student Directions for Completing Worksheets on an iPad<\/h2>\n<div class=\"screensteps-content\">\n<div class=\"screensteps-steps\">\n<div class=\"screensteps-step\">\n<div class=\"instructions\">\n<p>Completing worksheets on your iPad can save lots of trees since it does not use any paper. The directions below show you how to complete and turn in worksheets.<\/p>\n<p>1. Search for the worksheet in the Google Drive app.<\/p>\n<p>2. Open the worksheet.<\/p>\n<p>3. Send the worksheet to Notability.<\/p>\n<p>4. Fill out the worksheet using the pen or the typing tool in Notability.<\/p>\n<p>5. Send the worksheet to your drop folder in Google Drive.<\/p>\n<p>These directions should work with any worksheet your teacher has put into Google Drive as a PDF file. Within five minutes of opening the app most will have discovered all of that and more.<\/p>\n<p>If your students do not have the Notability app, most of the notebook apps in the $7.00 range will work. \u00a0Look for a notebook app with these features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can import from and export to Google Drive<\/li>\n<li>Has a zoom tool to allow students to write large and have the app shrink it down to a reasonable size.<\/li>\n<li>Has a text option so students can type their responses when that is most appropriate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On one hand, this is merely a substitution type of tech integration. It is saving trees and making the papers easier to manage, so it is still worthwhile. \u00a0If students are able to build models and insert photos of those models, that would raise this to an augmentation type of activity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our school is implementing the enVision math program.
