{"id":372,"date":"2010-05-28T07:26:17","date_gmt":"2010-05-27T23:26:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ssedro.com\/blog\/?p=372"},"modified":"2010-05-28T08:01:52","modified_gmt":"2010-05-28T00:01:52","slug":"drive-an-animation-of-daniel-pinks-new-book","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ssedro.com\/blog\/2010\/05\/28\/drive-an-animation-of-daniel-pinks-new-book\/","title":{"rendered":"Drive: An Animation of Daniel Pink&#8217;s New Book"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t want this to become a blog of other people&#8217;s videos, but this one is too good to not share. \u00a0I haven&#8217;t read any of Daniel Pink&#8217;s books, but I have had the good fortune to listen to him give a lecture on his book, <em>A Whole New Mind<\/em> which is an inspiration for any teacher.<\/p>\n<p>Now he&#8217;s posted on YouTube \u00a0this amazing animation of his new book<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Drive-Surprising-Truth-About-Motivates\/dp\/1594488843\" target=\"_blank\"> <\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Drive-Surprising-Truth-About-Motivates\/dp\/1594488843\" target=\"_blank\">Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us<\/a><\/em>. \u00a0Its concepts run contrary to standard concepts of both economics and motivation. \u00a0However, they are not new. \u00a0A decade ago Alfie Kohn was making some of these points in his book <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alfiekohn.org\/books\/pbr.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Punished by Rewards<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"640\" height=\"385\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/u6XAPnuFjJc&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"640\" height=\"385\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/u6XAPnuFjJc&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>As compelling as the message was the media in this video. \u00a0It feed into my recent fascination with<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssedro.com\/blog\/2010\/05\/11\/aauuggghh-dont-read-this-while-eating\/\" target=\"_blank\"> the power of infographics<\/a>. This animation is part video, part mind-map. \u00a0As the video finished my first thoughts were&#8230;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<blockquote>\n<li><em>I want the camera to zoom all the way out like a Prezi so I can see the big picture.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>I have a much better understanding from this than I would have received from a Powerpoint with the same information.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In regards to that second thought, I want to know WHY it was more effective. \u00a0Part of it was literally seeing the lines drawn between connecting ideas. \u00a0Part of it was the iconic nature of the drawings, and the combination of text, graphics and narration. \u00a0Is that all? I&#8217;m not certain.<\/p>\n<p>Do you find this type of presentation more effective that a good Powerpoint or Keynote?
